  • 5 It's a hidden gem

    Great as Yo Sushi and Wagamama are Mount Fuji shows another side of Japanese food. It's the perfect friendly little neighbourhood restaurant teleported from Tokyo into appropriately futuristic shadow of Selfridges. For those on a budget two people can eat great food for just ten pounds all in (tap water to drink). But even if you splurge it remains a bargain. That rare thing in Birmingham a great affordable mid-rangeish place to eat. With little gangways for the waiting staff between diners this is a very authentic Japanese experience. And the sushi and side orders are great (tempura and fried tofa are well worth trying) I think the bento boxes are the crowning glory (the chicken or the cod in particular). Although my other half swears by the chicken curry. Unusually for a Japanese restaurant the deserts are delicious and there are a wide variety of properly strange (to Westerners) Japanese soft drinks. The staff are very friendly and very good at their jobs. And the crowd who come here is entertainingly eclectic. Plus you can people watch through the windows or pick a seat near the kitchen and chef watch instead! So next time there's a huge queue at Wagamamas walk on by and discover a proper little bit of downtown Tokyo. ^-^
